MALARIA DAY 25th April 25, 2023
Every year 25th April is celebrated world wide as Malaria Day with new theme .In 2023 the Theme is “ TIME TO DELIVER ZEROMALARIA; INVEST, INNOVATE :IMPLEMENT” The third I Implementation is for highlighting the importance of reaching Marginalized population with the tools and strategies available.
In Pakistan Malaria is Endemic and a high rise is reported in 2022 between January and August as over 3.4 Million suspected cases as compared with 2.6 Million over the course of 2021.More rise reported in Sindh and Baluchistan after divesting floods contributing 78% to all confirmed cases.
Malaria is life threatening disease caused by parasite which are transmitted in humans by the bite of infected female anopheles Mosquito ,it is also transmitted by infected blood transfusion, Organ Transplant ,Sharing contaminated syringes and needles also from mother to child before or during delivery.
The first symptom is fever, Headache, Chills which usually appear with in 10 to 15 days after the bite of infected Mosquito and may be mild and if not recognized as Malaria can progress to severe illness even Death with in a period of 24 hours.
Malaria is one of leading cause of death in Pakistan and due to sharing borders with Iran & Afghanistan with high mobility of population along the coastal borders of KPK is at greater risk.
Pregnant woman are at greater risk of severe outcomes if infected as Falciparum can accumulate in placenta and cause adverse effects like Miscarriage, Intrauterine Deaths Premature delivery ,Low Birth Weight & Neonatal Deaths while as estimated 40% of Worlds pregnant Women are exposed to Malaria which leads to Maternal Anemia & Mortality ( which is preventable)
WHO advises to strengthen the preventive tools for Vector Control and also active Surveillance to identify high risk areas for better intervention for prevention.
Public awareness messages through Media,LHWSand Health Education also play a vital role in prevention.
All Suspected cases should be confirmed using Microscopy or RDT which will enable HCP to distinguish between Malaria & Non Malaria Fever for proper treatment .
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN TREATMENT .

Public Awareness through short, Conscise & Clear Messages
Use of Long Lasting Insecticidal nets .
Application Mosquito Repellant to exposed areas of body
Use of Nets on doors & Windows.
Use of Full Sleeves
