INCREASED INCIDENCE OF SUICIDAL DEATH IN PAKISTAN
According to WHO reports about 8.9%suicidal deaths occur/ 100,000 people among which 13.3 % are Male & 4.3 % Females, this rate is slightly below the global average of 9%.
The number of deaths due to Suicide in a year /100,000 people (CRUDE SUICIDE RATE)
1. 2019, was 8.9% with 0% increase from 2018
2. 2018 was 8.9% with 2.2 % decline from 2017
3. 2017 was 9.io% with 0% increase from 2016
4. 2016 was 9.10% increase by 1.11 %from 2015.
According ScienceDirect.com In 2019 between 15 to 35 people die by suicide every day which is as one person kills himself every hour (By Atika Rahman & Jahazaib Haq). They conducted a Study from a Newspaper (The Daily Nation) took data for suicidal deaths reported from 1st March 2021 to 28th February 2022
During this 12 month study they found 51 suicidal deaths among which 65% were male & 35% female.
Now a days more suicidal deaths are being reported from District Thatta as in recent past were hot topic in District Tharparkar.
But no any research is conducted at Government level or at private level but In Tharpakar District one study conducted and reported at Aljazeera in June 19 2020 and statistics are alarmingly high while the population in Tharparkar is 1.65 Million .Detailed study has shown various variables as most of population is Non-Muslim in Tharparkar District & according to police 113 suicides deaths are reported in 2020.
According to Express Tribune 11th September 2022 in a seminar arranged by many well known Psychiatrist
iatics and other organizations it was revealed that the Suicidal rate in Pakistan has not only alarmingly increased to 8% but one out of every 200 people attempt Suicide according to WHO.
In a study conducted by Researchers of AKU about 800,000 suicidal deaths Globally 75% are from Low & Middle Income countries including Pakistan ,while 15 to 20 students commit suicide every day ,the reason behind are multiple including Unemployment ,Poverty ,Family Dispute, Depression & various Social Pressure.
According to well known Psychologist Dr Darya Khan 80% people in Pakistan commit suicide due to depression.
Pakistan is a Muslim Country (97%) population of Muslims where Muslim law is practiced and in Islam suicide is Sin while it is punishable to Fine or imprisonment there fore many cases go unreported due to Medico legal and Police Investigation issues where police not only Harass the families of deceased but ask for heavy bribe .
Even Pakistan is 6th Highest populous country but has less than 500 Psychologists & Psychiatrist for entire population, while according to a survey 36% Population suffer from anxiety, Depression caused by strained Family & Friendship , Feeling unfit in society ,the Country ,s unstable Economic & Political condition leading to poverty & Unemployment.
Ever rising prices of daily use Items disturb Mental Health which being a part of Universal definition of Health is most neglected Health problem even no strong transparent Surveillance.
These cases reported of either suicidal Deaths or Attempting Suicide is just an Ice Berg under which how much is no one Knows or cares and in our congested society just to visit a Psychiatrist is considered a Stigma and we really do not know the exact number of people using Anti Depression medicines.
People cover up what happened to their loved ones and TABOO prevents discussion while 15 to 35 people end their lives in Pakistan daily which means one person per Hour.
It is time that provide Justice to every one so that Evil Forces can be wiped off and by joining hands together to solve problems collectively can bring a better and positive change as one alone cannot do anything.
